Alevin Streamkeeper App
One place for streamkeeper groups to run their group, record surveys in the field (even offline) and make their data count. Works on your phone and your computer.
The demo is filled with fake data for demonstration only. Nothing there is real streamkeeper data.
Why it matters
Salmon monitoring is shrinking. Trained streamkeepers, working through the Streamkeepers Program developed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and overseen by The Pacific Streamkeepers Federation, can help fill the gap with credible data.
- Almost two-thirds of historically monitored salmon populations in BC and Yukon had no reported spawner estimates in 2014–2023 (Atkinson, Carturan & Peacock 2025, CJFAS).
- About 80% of BC salmon spawning streams are "data-deficient", with no count since 2018 or earlier (Pacific Wild 2021).
Organizing a group is hard work
Streamkeeper groups run on volunteer time, and much of it goes into coordination rather than time on the stream.
- People: keeping track of members, roles and who is trained for what.
- Scheduling: getting the right people to the right site at the right time.
- Data: paper forms and scattered spreadsheets that need re-entering and checking.
- Turnover: knowledge leaves when volunteers do.
- Impact: data that never leaves the group can't inform decisions.
Running your group
Alevin keeps your group's people, plans and know-how in one place.
- Manage members and roles so everyone knows who does what.
- Keep modules from the Streamkeepers Handbook and equipment lists at hand, in the office or on the stream.
- Assign and schedule surveys so the right people are in the right place.
- Hand over responsibilities smoothly when volunteers move on.
- Works on your phone and your computer.
Making data count
From the field to a published dataset, Alevin helps your group's data stay credible and get used.
- Record surveys in the field, even offline, and they sync when you're back in coverage.
- Review submissions before they're accepted, with a clear record of who recorded and changed what.
- Your data stays your group's until you choose to publish it.
- Build reports and charts, and export your data when you need it.
- Organize work by Sites and Projects.
- Collaborate with other groups across a watershed.
